SEMINAR ON SENSITIZATION OF THE COMMON PUBLIC WITH PREVENTIVE PROTOCOLS ON ORAL CANCER

The seminar was organized to address the rising incidence of oral cancer and the lack of awareness regarding early detection and preventive measures. The primary goal was to bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and public practice by educating the community on lifestyle risks and self-examination techniques.

Experts highlighted that while genetics play a role, the vast majority of cases are lifestyle-driven. Key triggers discussed included:

  • Tobacco Consumption: Smoking and smokeless tobacco (chewing tobacco, snuff).

  • Alcohol Synergism: The risk increases exponentially when alcohol is combined with tobacco use.

  • Betel Quid (Areca Nut): A common cultural practice that remains a leading cause of Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF).

  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus): The emerging role of viral infections in oropharyngeal cancers.
